Optical Adhesives
Ultra Low Refractive Index UV Cured Adhesives for Optical Applications.
MY Polymers introduces a series of optically clear low refractive index UV curable adhesives of low to medium viscosities. All the adhesives are 100% solids. They are designed for bonding and encapsulation of optical components such as optical fibers, lenses, prisms and quartz windows.
MY-133 is a low viscosity UV cured adhesive which is characterized with an ultra low refractive index of 1.33 (in the cured state).
MY-133 was built especially to answer the need for a very low RI encapsulating material.
It cures to a clear low modulus solid that can be cured to a depth of a few millimeters by the action of radiation sources at 300-400nm.
It is useful as a coating material and for the encapsulation of various optical components such as optical fibers, light-guides, lenses and other components where the enhancement of total internal reflection is the issue. As a cladding material for fibers, it has the potential for the best available numerical aperture. For more details see the Data Sheet for MY-133. For better adhesion special Primers. may be used.
MY-133V series is an extension series for the standard MY-133 product. These products share the same low RI but with different viscosities and different sets of mechanical properties.
MY-132 is the newest addition and the lowest refractive index on our list. It has a RI of 1.320 in the cured state at the near IR (0.9-1.0 micron). It is a low viscosity product with low modulus. For improved adhesion it may need a primer. A special primer with n=1.32 is available.
A non-UV curable material with the same low refractive index of 1.33 is available as a moisture curable MY-133MC. It is characterized with better adhesion and better mechanical strength than that of the UV curable version. In addition it does not need inerting and requires no radiation equipment. At a somewhat higher refractive index other range of mechanical properties and adhesion can be realized.
MY-136 and MY-1375 are medium viscosity adhesives and coating materials which are designed for cladding and other coating applications. As their name suggests, they cover the range of RI of 1.36-1.38. In general they exhibit better adhesion and better mechanical properties than the MY-133 series.
To achieve other properties, higher RI products with extremely good adhesion and mechanical properties are offered.
MY-145 to MY-147 series are tough UV curable acrylic-urethane materials which are characterized with a refractive index of 1.45 -1.47 (cured) and which can be supplied with a range of hardness from soft elastomeric gels to a high modulus and high Tg materials. All of which are characterized with very high adhesion to various substrates including glass, ceramics, oxides, metals and plastics. MY-147 is made to match the refractive index of fused quartz and glasses and is available in a number of grades.
MY-142 is an intermediate product between MY-133 and MY-145 with a refractive index of 1.42. It has good adhesion to most substrates although not as good as the higher refractive index products. Other refractive index UV adhesives (such as the ranges 1.33–1.40 and the range 1.42-1.49) are available on request and can be tailor made to suit specific applications in terms of viscosity, hardness and other mechanical properties.
